Description
Redbank Gorge is located 156km west of Alice Springs within the West MacDonnell (Tyurrete) National Park. Situated close to the base of Mt Soder(Rwetyepme), the stunning gorge and chasm is a refuge for many threatened plants and animal species. Visitors may reach the Gorge from the car park via a 2km, 1.5hr return walk along the sandy creek bed. Swimming is popular however the water temperature is very cold and floatation devices are recommended. For experienced walkers, Section 12 of the Larapinta Trail starts and finishes at the car park. There are two campgrounds located close to Redbank Gorge with excellent basic camping facilities. The larger Woodlands area is well set up with shady camps and gas cooking facilities whilst the Ridgetop Area exhibits glorious views to Mt Sonder and surrounding West MacDonnell ranges. Both areas have toilets, fireplaces and picnic tables with sandy, level and shaded campsites in contrast with the rugged rocky surrounds. Sites are limited operating on a first come, first served basis with fees paid via an honesty box system.
